In 2006 Awetu procured funding from BBC Children in Need and created the post of Children & Young People’s Outreach Worker, a dedicated post that works with the children of Awetu’s service users, providing support and information to these young carers and arranging regular trips and activities to give the children and young people respite from adult responsibilities of caring and advocating for the members of their family who have mental health difficulties. These activities can be as varied as a trip to the cinema or an arts and crafts day, allowing the children and young people to have fun, and a chance to be young. Other activities are designed to give them new skills, such as swimming classes or the “Young Lifesavers” course, which teaches basic first-aid seven to fourteen year-olds.
