Awetu’s core activity, this enables us to access our potential client/participant groups, already commonly identified as ‘hard to reach’. Awetu’s staff are respected and welcomed by a wide range of community groups and organisations. It is through this involvement with the community organisations and groups that we keeps in touch with the needs of its service users and importantly is able raise the awareness of the issues of mental health and the problems faced by those with mental ill-health, helping community facilities to become more accessible and welcoming to people with mental ill-health. Outreach Workers also make regular trips to local hospitals1, meeting with people who could benefit from Awetu’s services, with the offer of continuing support once they leave the hospital or just a chance to talk to a sympathetic listener. The Outreach Workers use a “recovery plan” model, to identify the areas our service users wish to improve in their lives, from employment and finances to their health and personal well-being, and help the service users set and attain goals to make notable and demonstrable progress in fulfilling their ambitions.
